Associate FAQ

What does it mean to be an SSJ Associate in Mission?

Associates recognize that they have been called to live the same mission as the Sisters of Saint Joseph.

“We live and work that all people may be united with God and with one another.” Constitutions, Sisters of Saint Joseph

Therefore Associates pray for the mission and translate these words to actions in their everyday living. This is their response to the universal call to holiness.

What is the process for becoming an Associate?

The first step is talk to a sister or an associate or call SSJ Associates in Mission Office (215-248-7239).

After an initial conversation you participate in an orientation process. This process is meant to help you discern your call as an associate as well as give you more information. A series of topics will be discussed with sisters and associates. The process ends with discernment and possible commitment to be an SSJ Associate in Mission.

Why become an Associate?

There are a variety of reasons. These are some of the most common reasons:

  • A desire to engage in a more intentional spiritual practice
  • Looking for a faith community to pray, minister and celebrate God’s presence in life
  • A desire to further social justice
  • Realize that life has a deeper meaning when lived in the context of reflection, shared experiences and meaningful ritual

Who are Associates?

Associates are Christian women and men, 18 years or older, with diverse backgrounds. Most associates have a previous relationship with Sisters of Saint Joseph through membership, family, friendship or ministry. These relationships are deepened by sharing, as an Associate, in the charism and the mission of the Sisters of Saint Joseph

What do we do as Associates?

The most important thing an Associate does is to live the mission in the daily circumstances of their lives. They share the mission by the witness of their lives.

In addition Associates may choose to participate in a Christian Growth Group, retreats, community gatherings and celebrations. Some Associates volunteer on committees, boards or at our sponsored works.
