Our Spirituality

Our Way of Being and Acting...that all may be one

The spiritual tradition of the Sisters of Saint Joseph is rooted in six core values found in the writings of Jean-Pierre Médaille, SJ. These core values can be considered as attitudes of heart or pathways that advance God’s desire that all be one. When lived as an integrated whole, these core values shape our worldview, our perspective, and our way of being and acting in the world. In this way, we participate in God’s on-going, unifying action and we give flesh to God’s great love in our world.

Pathways to Advancing Union

Six core values—attitudes of the heart—that formed the basis of the spiritual tradition of the Sisters of Saint Joseph really cannot be separated one from the other. When they live as an integrated whole, they shape our worldview, our perspective, and our way of being and acting in the world. This way of acting and being make it possible for God’s love to take flesh in and through us. We become co-creators with God.

Inclusive love…
relating with the all-embracing, inclusive ways of God; seeing as God sees

Self-Emptying Love…
letting go of whatever is standing in the way of deepening union

All-Permeating Love…
recognizing that no aspect of creation and human existence is outside the life-giving, unifying love of God

Zeal…
giving of myself and risking for the sake of God’s unifying action and the needs of the dear neighbor, lightly holding the end result that rightly belongs to God

Listening (Contemplative) heart…
nurturing the interior space needed to notice God’s movement in all aspects of life

Cordial Charity…
responding to the needs of the dear neighbor with a quality of presence (a way of relating) that vivifies, strengthens, unites; being a presence that unites
