Service in Other Ministries

Sisters of Saint Joseph of Philadelphia live and work so that all people may be united with God and with one another. Each of our ministries reflects our response to our mission of unity with a special preference for those who are poor. Following the example of Jesus, we embrace all the works of mercy which tend to the spiritual and temporal needs of our neighbor and which promote the glory of God.

SSJ - Service in Other Ministries

Our ministries flow directly from these works of mercy, finding expression in all levels of education, in various human services, and in diverse forms of spiritual and pastoral ministry. Constitutions p.17, paragraph 18

Congregational Service
Sisters serve in internal and administrative ministries for the Congregation including elected leadership positions and congregational offices.

Members of the Congregation minister in 13 states and in the District of Columbia within educational, social service, spiritual, and health care ministries.

Diocesan and Parish Ministry
Sisters serve in individual parishes and in various positions at the Diocesan level.

Education
Sisters serve as professors, teachers, presenters, tutors, and in campus ministry at all levels of education. Members serve as administrators, teachers, and staff in educational institutions.

Healthcare
The healing ministry of Jesus is expressed in healthcare facilities where sisters serve as chaplains, health clinicians, pastoral ministers, and translators.

Social Service
Sisters work in ministries of outreach to meet the needs of the dear neighbor – particularly asylees, refugees, immigrants, abused or exploited women and children – in social service sites including centers of hospitality, counseling, literacy, and SSJ Refugee Ministry Project.

Spirituality and Spiritual Direction
Sisters serve as spiritual directors for individuals and also offer guided and directed retreats. A number of sisters minister as staff, program directors,  and administrators at diocesan retreat houses and spirituality centers of other religious congregations.

Volunteer
Our mission calls us to respond in love to the needs of our dear neighbor wherever we are. Volunteer ministries offer sisters myriad opportunities to live out the mission of Jesus in diverse places, responding to many different needs.  Sponsored ministries, parishes, and civic organizations benefit from sisters’ presence and service. Sisters serve on Boards of numerous institutions including the sponsored ministries’ Boards.
