Sister Anna Marie Boyer died on December 22, 2023, and was buried on December 29, 2023 at Saint Joseph Villa. The Boyer family survived the Great Depression through their love of God, each other, and music. Joseph and Anne Marie had six children, four boys and two girls. Anna Marie was the fourth of their crew. They lived in St. Leo’s Parish in Tacony and were taught by the Sisters of Saint Joseph in elementary school. The boys took violin lessons and passed their knowledge of the instrument on to Anna Marie who took formal instruction at St. Hubert’s High School. In her senior year, Anna Marie was chosen as concert meister of the school orchestra, and this began her life long passion for music.
After a year working as Sears, Anna Marie knew she wanted more from life and began thinking about a religious vocation. For fourteen years, this young sister balanced teaching classes and playing for parishes. As she moved on to high school, Anna Marie found more challenges but also more excitement in the teaching and music arenas.
She pursued degrees in Music in various colleges and universities and the epitome of her music career was when Anna Marie was appointed as a consultant for the College Board EQ Project. After several weeks of training, she and another sister visited area schools that applied for Middle States Certification. However, the demands of high school began to tell on her strength, so Anna Marie returned to music and teaching in elementary school. She was assigned to St. Andrew’s Parish in Drexel Hill and remained there for 31 years. As time moved on, this virtuoso music teacher began to experience a diminishment in her voice and flexibility of her fingers. She was honored for her ministry in music to the parish and school in the 100th anniversary .
Anna Marie spent her final days in Saint Joseph Villa and exchanged her music for words with God in our chapel. One of her favorite prayers was from St. Paul, “To me, the very least of all the holy ones, this grace was given,,,” Anna Marie continues to bring her music and grace to the Halls of Joseph and Paradise. Rest in Peace, Anna Marie.
