Sister Georgeanne Esker

Sister Georgeanne Esker died on September 17, 2022 at Saint Joseph Villa, Flourtown, Pennsylvania .  The Funeral Mass was offered at Saint Joseph Villa on September 22.

Mary Dolores Esker was born and raised in Bayonne, New Jersey, one of four children born to Anne and George Esker.  She was especially devoted to her sister Pat and family, and had prayed fervently for a “little sister” when she was a child.

Mary attended Saint Mary School and Holy Family Academy in Bayonne.  She loved everything Bayonne and worked for ten years in the business world before entering the Sisters of Saint Joseph in 1960.  She was well-loved by her “party” (entrance group) whom she often entertained with amusing stories of her working days.

Upon receiving the religious habit in April, 1961 she also received the religious name Sister Georgeanne.  She spent twenty-five years teaching in grade schools and high schools in the Newark and Philadelphia archdioceses.  Her business skills came into play as she transitioned from ministry in schools to ministry in offices at various levels.  Sister Georgeanne served where she was needed and she brought her kindness and her good humor wherever she went.

Sister Georgeanne worked tirelessly in whatever she did.  She loved her students and she loved to learn—even offering to type papers for her colleagues in graduate courses so she could learn from their research!  She had great devotion to the Blessed Mother and prayed that Mary would slip her in the side door of heaven.

We give thanks for Mary Esker’s life with us and for her commitment to working for God and for others.  May she now celebrate eternal joy and love with our God and all in heaven.!
